Top of the flocks

Free-range egg producer Clarence Court has installed radios on all of it farms, as founder Philip Lee-Woolf believes that his chickens are more relaxed while listening to music. The theory is that a more relaxed chicken makes for a better layer, which helps produce the perfect egg.“Chickens love to be busy and they need plenty of stimulation, which is why all our hens are free to roam and forage on acres of green pasture from dawn to dusk,” explains Philip. “Music will provide an even more exciting environment in which to hop, bop and bound,” he adds.
Philip has been airing tunes from his farm in the Cotswolds to his flock and observing their behavioural patterns. The official Top Five Poultry Pleasers that he has compiled will be distributed to all of the Clarence Court farmers.
For those who want to watch the chickens let their feathers down, a hen-cam has been installed that can be accessed through the Clarence Court website: www.clarencecourt.co.uk/hencam
